I had a BIG craving for salty-sweet stuff. And halt! I know these don’t have sprinkles but I was admittedly trying to fulfill a craving, and stumbled onto something definitely delicious.
If ever there was a cookie I’d pinned, bookmarked and revisited over and over and over before actually committing to the labor involved, this is it. When I tell you the number of site views I must have contributed to this recipe post, oy. It’s soaring somewhere near 30x, that’s for sure.
Just a little detour to show you how I’ve been doing and what I’ve been up to. I went to Whole Foods yesterday and grabbed some snacks for a trip. I saw a sign (cue Ace Of Base) and what do you know? A vegan mini muffin company with muffins for super cheap! That’s not a common sighting. I picked up a few of them in various flavors to try them out while I’m recovering from a crazy workweek.
Sup y’alls? I’ve been busy around here between a funked up work schedule, visiting my mom and siblings, and just general life (a.k.a. being tired and passing out on my couch). However, I’ve been able to make some good eats lately and I wanted to share with you one that I made before I went out to see the little mister, my brother, who loves anything chocolate.
I’m going to put my mind to doing something I’ve wanted to for a while. I’ve wanted to test out all of the options in NYC’s vegan ice cream offerings but haven’t had the chance to yet. I’ve been to what many describe as the vegan ice cream haven, the ice cream shop formerly known as Lula’s Sweet Apothecary, and it’s everything you could expect. Lula’s is an amazing ice cream shop with great service, and an unpretentious vibe and amazing flavors. The cake batter soft serve is the stuff of ice cream-y dreamies. But, given that I don’t always have cash and they are cash only, sometimes I’m relegated to something else that’ll accept my boring debit card.
So I’m going to try doing something simultaneously with my regular posts. I’m writing about it as an intention to complete while I do what is normally a part of vegan MoFo, which I’ve already been slackin’ with.
I’ll be trying the ice cream offerings at:
- 16 Handles, a fro-yo chain with new vanilla soy yogurt,
- Chloe’s Soft Serve Fruit Co. with all vegan ice cream made with bananas (yes it’s what you make at home)
- Alchemy Creamery, an artisanal ice cream company from Williamsburg
- Van Leeuwen, who have both a truck and a storefront in the downtown NYC area and 4 solid vegan flavor
- Steve’s — not a store but a really highly acclaimed local small-batch ice cream company
I have been up to a lot of baking recently. I’m going to save the photos for when I show you the process behind the recipes I share with you, but I want to update before the close of Vegan Mofo Day 1, to lock in my participation. I’ve been antsy every year about participating but the more I knew about it, the more anxiety I got about it and the less I did about it, so like everything else that matters, I have learned to do it the last minute! Procrastination may not be the ultimate solution to anxiety, but sometimes it helps me function and produce something better. Sometimes, timing doesn’t allow me to procrastinate nor get anxious, so I’ve found myself the day of vegan Mofo beginning (okay, technically it started yesterday) quite content that I’ve serendipitously planned to test out a new savory recipe (which you can read about on my other blog, The Flavorful Pursuit) and that I had a dessert planned. Things are finally looking up!
Let’s be honest, vegan foods are not always good emulators of non-vegan counterparts. Sometimes it’s a texture thing, sometimes it’s a taste thing in general, and sometimes the whole thing is ‘off’. That can be a problem with mock-foods. To me, that’s okay. It just means I’ll eat more plant-foods because I know what I’m getting myself into. Plant foods usually trump plant-food-based products nutritionally and usually, they taste better, too. But, every now and again you have something that fits a certain flavor expectation and you really appreciate it. Enter, Phoney Baloney’s coconut bacon.
Check out the source of my most recent chocolate delusions and what’s been driving me mad for a few weeks of constantly thinking ’bout it. Vegan. Hershey’s. Pie. You know, the one you got from Burger King.
I want to apologize in advance for this one— I was in a rush when I made them and didn’t have much time to photograph… Gulp. I mean, I didn’t have any and I’m sorry you didn’t get to see them because they were a sight. I will be making them again as requested, so I think you’ll be seeing them soon.
I’m not much into simple things these days, especially no food-induced nostalgia of eating simple classic foods. So when it comes time to make things for people who like the classics, I’m inclined to want to add something to it. I’ve apparently never heard of the idiom “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”
*I want to fix all the things.*
